Greetings! In this blog, I’d like to share some recent sugar industry-related information, including the ASCL’s Outstanding Service award recipient for 2013, and the deadline for ordering tissue culture sugarcane plantlets.

It’s hard to believe that Charley and I are leaving on Saturday to attend the ISSCT Congress. This meeting, which happens just once every three years, is hosted by Brazil, and is the largest international sugarcane conference in the world. You can read more about it here.

Green Pool Cuts Sugar Surplus by 23% as Brazil Makes Ethanol – For the 2013-14 season that starts (in most countries) in October, sugar supplies will be 2.89 million metric tons higher than consumption. The global sugar surplus will be 23% smaller than forecast, as millers in Brazil direct more cane to making ethanol – at the expense of the sweetener. Ethanol pays more than sugar, and it is usually paid for more promptly than is sugar. For more information, visit

Congratulations to retired grower Daniel J. Viator of Youngsville, who has been selected as the recipient of American Sugar Cane League’s Outstanding Service award for 2013. He served as a research assistant with LSU Agronomy from 1979-2010, and as President of the League in 1991-92. He is also the former owner of the 2,200-acre Triple V Farms of Youngsville and part-owner of the 1,100-acre Viator Farms of Jeanerette. You can read more about it here.

In other news, BSES Limited wants to remind Australian cane growers and productivity service boards that orders for tissue culture sugarcane plantlets will close on July 15, 2013. Plantlets ordered before this date will be delivered to growers for planting in autumn 2014. “By planning ahead,” says Gae Plunkett, Development Officer – Varieties, Professional Extension and Communication Unit, BSES, “growers can make a real improvement to the productivity of their farm and add value to the Australian sugarcane industry as a whole.”
